Photosynthesis - How plants and algae turn sunlight into life
Prof. Ben Engel

Plants and microscopic algae use the sun's light to produce oxygen, while removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and producing food. This has shaped the history of life on Earth and created a home for humans to live. Find out how the research group of Ben Engel uses advanced electron microscopes to explore the tiny protein machines that perform photosynthesis inside algae cells. Learn how the carbon cycle connects all life on our planet, and how the imbalance of this cycle is causing our global climate to change.

Stem cells – Renewal and re-modelling of the adult brain
Prof. Fiona Doetsch

We know that the adult brain contains stem cells. The discovery of these stem cells raises fascinating questions about how they may affect our learning and behavior. In other cases, the same cells may contribute to cancer. Learn more about the identity of brain stem cells, the signals that switch them on, how they contribute to brain plasticity, and whether they can eventually be harnessed for brain repair.
